Why Diamond Grinding Matters Before Epoxy Installation

The step you never see is the one that decides whether your floor is still bonded in ten years.

Surface preparation is the least photogenic part of a coating job and the only part that determines whether it lasts. A coating is only as strong as the concrete underneath it.

What grinding actually does

Diamond tooling removes the weak top layer of laitance, old sealers, glues, and contamination, leaving a consistent profile with thousands of micro-anchors for the resin. It also flattens high spots and exposes the cracks and pits that need repair.

Why acid etching falls short

Acid etching chemically roughens the very top of the slab, but it does not remove sealers, it cannot deal with oil contamination, and it leaves residue that must be neutralized. On a garage floor that has been parked on for a decade, it is not enough.

What happens after the grind

We chase and fill cracks, repair spalled areas and pits, treat control joints, then vacuum the slab clean before priming. Only then does the base coat go down.
